Stuhler’s MACS Romp at “The Rock” No Joke

posted by Admin on 02/03/08

Gary Stuhler, Greencastle, PA, added to his MACS Series career win total by capturing the $5,000 top prize on Saturday, April 1, at Rick and Ernie Jones’ Oval Track Promotions, Allegheny County Speedway, Cumberland, MD.

Josh “Kid Rocket” Richards and Keith Barbara, paced the 24-car 50-lap A Main, with eventual winner Stuhler riding in fourth.

Barbara shot out of the chalks with defending Series Champion, Mike Balzano quickly advancing from his third place spot, followed by Richards, Jason Covert, and Stuhler who had slid to fifth. Barbara was leading impressively over a stellar field as dicing throughout the pack was hot.

“The Rock’s” 5/8 mile was producing incredible speeds as Barbara attempted to keep the field at bay. Balzano would inch closer and show his nose to Barbara, but was unable to make the pass. By lap 3, Stuhler had advanced to fourth slotting Covert to fifth.

Barbara’s blistering pace found him catching the tail of the field on lap 15 as he tried to shake Balzano tenacious pursuit. Balzano was feeling pressure of his own from Richards, as this rising star had his guise on second and the lead.

The first caution appeared on lap 22 which saw Barbara still in command over Balzano, Richards, Stuhler and Covert. Barbara fired the field at the cone for the double file restart. It was incredible! By the beginning of lap 23, Stuhler snared the lead vaulting from fourth to first in 5/8 of a mile.

Stuhler, once in command looked invincible, but the quartet following him thought otherwise. Richards smoked Barbara on lap 30 setting sail for the fleet Stuhler.

“Mr. Smooth” was full throttle as the laps wound down. The next to last caution waved on lap 43 with Stuhler still on point over Richards, Barbara, Balzano and Covert.

On the restart Stuhler blazed the path with the final caution waving on lap 48 for Robbie Blair’s expired power plant. At this juncture, the top five were Stuhler, Richards, Balzano, Covert and Barbara, who had been penalized two spots for jumping the previous restart.

With a two lap dash to the checkers Stuhler had to fend off one more assault by Richards to claim the top prize. “Kid Rocket” finished second over Balzano, Barbara and Big Block Modified ace, Billy Decker. Rounding out the top ten were Jason Covert, who finished an impressive sixth after losing his power steering in the early stages, followed by Steve Shaver; Mark Banal, from 20th; “Hot Rod” Rod Conley; and Ron Davies.

The nightly MACS JRC winner’s were brothers Nathan and Nolan Miner, ages 6 and 8. They were escorted to victory lane to have their pictures taken with the feature winner.
