Miller Wows Them Collecting $10,000 in MACS’ 59th Anniversary Classic at Hagerstown

Nineteen year veteran, Jeremy Miller, Littlestown, PA, added another notch on his gun belt as he wowed the crowd during the Mid-Atlantic Championship sanctioned 59th Anniversary Classis at Frank Plessinger’s Hagerstown Speedway, Hagerstown, MD., collecting $10,000 for his “FANtastic” effort.

Bob Close and Jim Bernheisel paced the brimming 24 car field for the 59-lap A Main, with eventual winner Miller residing deep in the field at seventeen.

As the green waved, Bernheisel catapulted into the lead followed by Close; current MACS points leader, Gary Stuhler; Roy Deese, Jr., and Hagerstown Speedway’s 8-time track Champion Nathan Durboraw as they were all engaged in a very spirited battle for position and the lead. The top five were so close you could cover them with a blanket; as the racing quarters were tight.

As the battles for position fiercely ragged, spots were being swapped back and forth throughout the entire field as all the drivers took aim at the victory. The skirmish among the top five was absolutely incredible to watch as every position was contended over every square inch of the super wide and smooth surface.

Close challenged for the top spot several times nudging ahead of Bernheisel only to have the leader dart back past coming down the from chute on the three groove wide racing surface. The event was clicking off rapidly as Deese relegated Stuhler to fourth by lap 6.

On the 13th circuit, Stuhler regained third and again set sail for the lead duo that were hooked up in a door handle-to-door handle dog fight. Lap after lap Bernheisel hit his mark on the outside groove in his high-speed clash with Close.

The fast paced event saw Bernheisel catch lapped traffic by the 18th revolution as he looked for any help in shaking the tenacious grasp of Close. With the laps ticked down to Bernheisel second huge pay-day with the Series, the lapped traffic didn’t provide the needed surcease from the vicious onslaught of his contenders.

While this war was being waged up front, Miller was on a steady mark to the leaders. With 25 laps complete, the top five included the leader Bernheisel, Close, Stuhler, Deese, and Miller. Lapped traffic was now working into the hands of “Mr. Smooth”, Stuhler as he passed Close for second on lap 30.

With just one lapped car in front of him, Stuhler systemically positioned himself with Bernheisel squarely in his sites. Simultaneously, Miller was slotting into third and on the heels of Stuhler.

By lap 34, Stuhler made his move on Bernheisel and was quickly followed by the fleet Miller. Miller rapidly closed on Stuhler on lap 35 but didn’t have enough to gain the lead at the juncture. By the time the 36th circuit was in the books Miller made his decision blasting past Stuhler coming out of turn four taking the lead handily.

Miller immediately had obstacles in his path as lapped traffic was again and issue in the non-stop event. Miller handled the pressure like a PRO. He wasn’t the least bit rattled by the mass of contenders to his rear including Stuhler; Andy Anderson, from sixth; Close and Steve Shaver, from ninth.

The first of two cautions appeared late in the event. A first caution flew on lap 49 for debris on the front chute which restacked the field for a single file restart. Miller still the race leader was on the point of over Stuhler, Anderson, Shaver and Close.

Miller fired the field at the cone stepping out to a slight lead over his quartette of pursuers. Another quick caution flew on lap 50 for Mike Atherton’s mount as it expired drifting to a halt in turn one. Miller once again regrouped the field behind him with the top five remaining the same.

For the final time, Miller brought the field back to green and Stuhler, this time mounted a charge for the top spot but Miller fought of the advances. With three to go, Miller caught one more lapped car. Stuhler looking to take advantage of the situation as the leader temporarily checked-up but to no avail as Miller answered the challenge going on the claim the victory over Stuhler, Anderson, Shaver and Close.

The next tier of five included Bernheisel; Deese; Bo Feathers, from 19th; Jason Covert, from 21st; and 2002 Series Champion Jack Pencil, from 11th.
