Bloomquist Notches MACS’ “Firecracker 75” at Portsmouth Raceway Park

posted by Admin on 02/03/08

Mooresburg, Tennessee’s Scott Bloomquist notched his second career Mid-Atlantic Championship Series victory claiming the $10,000 top prize in the “Firecracker 75” at the Coleman families Portsmouth Raceway Park, Portsmouth, OH.

In victory lane Bloomquist cited, “Well, we were real patient and I really didn’t want to push the car too hard early but the longer our cars seem to run the better they get. You know, we got a real good race car. Vic Hill is doing our engines which run really smooth. They have plenty of power and it has just been a great night. We come up here just to run this one race this weekend…just want to keep the light bill paid”, concluded Bloomquist.

Rick “The Big Swede” Aukland and Davey “The Juice” Johnson paced the strong field of 24 cars to green with eventual winner, Scott Bloomquist slotted in eleventh. Johnson shot into the lead followed by Aukland; R.J. Conley; defending MACS Champion, Mike Balzano; and Jeremy Miller.

The pace was torrid with drivers running from top to bottom on the three grove wide surface. Conley inched past Aukland for second on lap 7 as Earl Pearson, Jr. simultaneously stole fifth from Miller. The top five could have been covered by a blanket on several occasions as the action was fast and furious the entire way around the 3/8 high-banked speed plant.

Conley was sizing Johnson up as the leader caught the tail of the field on lap 27. Conley used an outstanding move to gain the top spot from Johnson while the duo diced their way through the field. After gaining the top spot, Conley then had the lapped cars of his own to deal with as Johnson was trying to regain that lead utilizing the same tactics that had just cost him the point.

Conley successfully and skillfully worked his way through the traffic while holding off Johnson’s advances. The first of four caution appeared on lap 34 regrouping the field. Conley remained on point for the double file restart flanked by Johnson, Aukland, Balzano, and Pearson.

Conley fired the field at the cone with Johnson blazing down into turn on as the leaders raced side-by-side through turn two. Johnson nudged ahead going down the back chute and into turn three. Conley was blazing around the outside but his momentum wasn’t sufficient to carry him back into the lead as Johnson led lap 35 while Bloomquist muscled fifth away from Pearson.

Johnson continued to hold off Conley as Bloomquist nailed down fourth on lap 38 relegating Balzano to fifth. Johnson and Conley were all over each other as Bloomquist steadily reeled in Aukland for third. By lap 42 Bloomquist dispatched Aukland to fourth as the leaders were so engaged they weren’t aware they were going to be joined.

Conley slung it high while Johnson patrolled low, lap after lap while Bloomquist was tooling around the middle. With 25 laps remaining Bloomquist made his move and slid Conley to third and was carefully watching every move the leader, Johnson, was making.

Johnson saw Bloomquist nose a couple of times and knew he had an all out fight to keep the top spot. Johnson calculated his every turn of the wheel trying the thwart Bloomquist’s challenges for the lead. On lap 61 Bloomquist had sufficiently sized up the leader snaring the top spot as he blazed out of turn four.

Lapped traffic could again play a role as Bloomquist blazing pace caught the tail of the field on lap 63. Johnson tried everything he had in his vast repertoire to catch Bloomquist but with no success the rest of the way to the checkers. Following Bloomquist and Johnson were Jeff Taylor, from fifteenth; Pearson; and Conley.

The next tier of five included Aukland; Robbie Blair, from twenty-first; Balzano; Jeremy Miller; and current point leader Jason Covert, from thirteenth.
