Defending Series Champion, Mike Balzano, Parkersburg, WV notched his first win of the season during the annual Beacher Eaton/Bill Childers Memorial “King of the Ring 50” at BDS Promotions, Tyler County Speedway, Middlebourne, WV.
Hometown hero, Paul Wilmoth, Jr. and current MACS point leader Jason Covert paced the packed 24-car starting field to green beginning the 50 lap contest, while eventual winner, Balzano rode in sixth on the grid.
At the drop of the green, Wilmoth darted into the lead followed by Shaver, from third, Covert, Balzano, and Kenny Johnson. Wilmoth, after logging thousands of laps at the ¼ mile bull ring was flying and caught the tail of the field on lap 9.
Shaver knocked on the door several occasions but couldn’t make his move until Wilmoth encountered lapped traffic. Shaver slung his mount low trying to use the lapped car in a side job to take the lead. Wilmoth and Shaver made contact, as Shaver cleared the lapped car. Wilmoth, in the high groove had no where to go contacting the outside retaining wall halfway down the back chute bringing out the first of five cautions.
Shaver was now on point over Balzano, Mike Benedum, Tim McCreadie, and Covert. Shaver and Balzano fired the field at the cone for the double file restart with Shaver blasting into turn on maintaining the top spot. The next caution appeared on lap 12 for a major incident involving Doug Horton, Rod Conley, and Wilmoth.
After clearing the incident, Shaver remained on the point over Balzano, McCreadie, Benedum, and Covert. The final double file restart had both Shaver and Balzano setting the pace. The lead duo blazed the field back to life at the cone this time; however, Balzano had a firm plan to grab the lead from Shaver. Balzano blew in front of Shaver coming down the back chute and fully executed the pass going into turn three to lead the event as lap 13 went into the record books.
Shaver wasn’t going to go away that easily as he dogged Balzano throughout every corner. Balzano led to the next caution on lap 21 over Shaver, Covert, Robbie Scott, from seventh; and McCreadie; Wilmoth’s night ended at this juncture after brought out his third caution.
Now in single file formation Balzano led the field back to the cone with Shaver and Covert eyeing their options to dethrone the leader. Balzano continued to lead over Shaver, Covert, Scott and Johnson now comprising the top five as halfway was being shown.
By lap 30, Jim Bernheisel worked his way from his thirteenth starting spot into the top five. With 15 laps remaining, Balzano led over Shaver, Covert, Scott and Bernheisel, as Tim Dohm, loomed just outside the top five after starting sixteenth.
Balzano caught the tail of the field again on lap 38 with Shaver trying to seize an opportunity like he had early in the race, but Balzano saw the moves and was ready for Shaver’s challenges. Inside, outside the lead duo diced their way through the lapped traffic with Balzano successfully defending the lead.
The final caution came on lap 47 setting a three lap dash to the checkers. Balzano still manned the point over Shaver, Scott, Covert, and Bernheisel. Balzano was ready when the green appeared for the final time as Shaver’s onslaught was kept at bay to the checkers. Finishing third was Scott over Bernheisel and Tim Dohm. The next flight of five included Steve Weigle, from fifteenth; Jeremy Miller, from twenty-first; Corey Conley, from twentieth; Covert, and Jack Pencil from twenty-second.
