“The Stinger” Chad Hina stings MACS Field at Muskingum

“The Stinger” Chad Hina, Zanesville, OH, stung the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series field at Ronnie Moran’s Muskingum County Speedway, Zanesville, OH Saturday capturing his career first Series victory in the 2nd Annual “Y-City 50” claiming the $5,000 top prize.

A jubilant Hina when asked about what he thought when Aukland went sailing out over turn 3 and he inherited the lead indicated, “Honestly, I thought, Oh S#*%, I am leading this thing now.” Hina continued about the event by saying, “We came here and made a bunch of changes. If it weren’t for my mom and dad I don’t know how we’d do it. My dad works on the car all week long, I just show up on Saturdays and do what I can, but if weren’t for them (mom and dad), we wouldn’t be here. Also my brother Todd, he’s everything to me as well as my brother Larry, he’s and his wife are helping me. It takes a whole crew to do this and this is my biggest win of my career as he had the 5’ tall trophy from Zemba Brothers, Inc. standing at his side.”

Bart Hartman and 2004 Series Champion Robbie Blair paced the 25-car starting field to green with eventual winner, Chad Hina, slotted in sixth for the “Y-City 50”.

As the green flew, Blair rocketed into the lead only to have it called back for a poor start in mid-pack as the car were jammed up creating a ragged start. Hartman and Blair once again paced the field this time successfully starting the event with Hartman jumping into the lead over Rick Aukland, who advanced to second from fourth followed by, Doug Dodd, Hina, and Mike Balzano as Blair was shuffled back to sixth.

The action throughout the pack was incredible as every spot was in contention. By lap 9 which was the final lap that Hartman would lead, as Aukland, who had been seizing up the leader since the beginning of the event was preparing to make his move. The rest of the lead group included Dodd, Hina, Balzano and Blair was swarming around the lead duo waiting for a miscue.

Three distinct grooves were providing exciting action throughout. On lap 10, Aukland and Dodd both made their moves on Hartman as they blasted past him to grab the top two spots pushing the former leader to third.

Aukland though had a new set of challenges in front of him as he entered lap traffic on lap 11. Aukland the veteran he is took it all in stride as he fought back the fierce challenges for the lead as he diced through lapped traffic.

In some outstanding driving Hartman and Hina both got past Dodd on lap 13. The action had the fans cheering on their favorites in the field.

By lap 20, Aukland was still on point but Hina had moved into second over Blair, Dodd and Hartman. The first of four cautions flew on lap 26 from B.A. Malcuit, one of the Series WRISCO Aluminum ROY contenders as he looped his mount in turn two.

Aukland gathered the field behind him as Blair had clawed his way back into second over Hina, Hartman, and Dodd. Aukland fired the field at the cone and led to the next caution on lap 32 for Blair who’s mount limped to a stop in turn two with a flat tire.

The reorganized top five was Aukland, Hina, Hartman, Balzano, and Dodd. Aukland again took off at the stripe and as the leader entered turn three he broke a tie rod end sending him sailing off of turn three in a cloud of dust. When the former leader landed he broke several more component parts including the shock.
With Aukland’s night over Hina, who had been running a stout second, was now the new leader over Hartman; Balzano; Doug Drown, from twelfth; and Dodd. Hina wasn’t phased in the least by the host of drivers behind him as he confidently led the field back to green.

Hartman and Balzano were all over the leader but he was undaunted by their challenges as Drown and Dodd were locked in a dogfight for fourth. The final slow down came on lap 42 when a red flag was displayed for a fan who needed medical assistance in the stands.

After a very brief period the field was quickly realigned with Hina on point over Hartman, Balzano, Dodd and Drown. For the final time Hina blazed the field back to life and was able to handily fight back the efforts of Hartman, Balzano, Dodd and Drown to claim the victory. Steve Shaver, after failing to qualify during time trials because fuel pressure issues, won the first B Main and started seventeenth, claimed sixth place over Blair, who recovered from the lap 32 flat tire riding home seventh over Jim Bernheisel, from thirteenth; Eric Meyers, and Jason Covert.
