Miller Scores Big in MACS’ USA 100 at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway

Jeremy Miller, Littlestown, PA scored one of the most prestigious Mid-Atlantic Championship Series events of his career claiming the $10,000 top prize by taking Ernie Shelton’s 27th Annual USA 100TM presented by Thurston Spring Service at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, Jamaica, VA.

In victory lane, Miller indicated, “I’ve got to take my hat off to Bo Feathers; when you go race him he seems to get better every week. He was capable of winning this race; he raced me clean, and I raced him clean, what more can I say other than this is just awesome.”
When asked about the surface Miller continued, “The track was beautiful. I could run in the middle, top and bottom; you could run anywhere you wanted to. If things had been a little different I may not have won this thing; it’s about the best racing I’ve been in all year. To put my name in the USA 100 record books is a great deal,” summarized Miller.
Ricky Elliott and Bo Feathers fresh off of twin-25 wins sat on the front row of the final 50 lap segment of the USA 100TM with eventual winner Miller sitting in fourth on the grid.

Feathers snatched the lead at the drop of the green with Elliott, Miller, Pete Ivey, and Mike Balzano all in tow. Three wide or more racing was occurring throughout the entire field as the ultra-smooth and wide surface was prepared flawlessly by David Law giving the fans a real thrilling treat.

While Feathers maintained the point in the early going, Elliott and Miller diced inside and out swapping second spot back and forth almost every lap. Finally Miller made the pass stick on lap 6 as he now could concentrate on the leader Feathers.
On lap 23, with much of the focus on the lead duo, Booper Bare, Balzano, Jim Bernheisel, Pete Ivey, and Bob Salathe were fighting it out for fourth. Bernheisel came out on top taking fourth over Ivey, Bare, Salathe, and Balzano.
Feathers and Miller hooked up in a tremendous battle for the lead with the two providing outstanding, clean racing action. Miller turned up the wick just past half way, but Feathers was up to every challenge of his contender. Miller would edge ahead only to have Feathers fend off his advances beating him back to the strip. Feathers held the top spot until lap 28 after numerous laps of side-by-side racing with Miller.
With Miller snagging the lead by thousandths of second on lap 28 and Feathers was relegated to second, but he wasn’t going to take Miller’s pass for the lead laying down. Feathers battled back from the outside rail but couldn’t strong arm the lead back from Miller.

The final caution waved on lap 36 providing Feathers his last real shot at the fleet Miller. Miller fired the field at the cone for the final time, and he held off Feathers onslaught as the two dashed into turn one and out of turn 2 with Miller still on point. Miller started to stretch his advantage out over Feathers but now Feathers had a fight of his own on his hands from Elliott for second.

Miller caught the tail of the field for the first and only time on lap 48 as he was starting to pull away from Feathers, Elliott, Bernheisel and Ivey. At the checkers Miller had opened a comfortable lead of several car lengths over second place finisher Feathers over Elliott, Bernheisel, and Ivey.
Finishing sixth was David Williams, from twelfth; Jack Pencil, from fourteenth; Salathe, ASI Racewear Event Hard Charger Devin Friese, from twenty-second; and current MACS points leader Jason Covert.

In the Sunoco Race Fuels 1st Twin 25-lap Qualifying race presented by Bazell Oil saw Rick Elliott and Pete Ivey pacing the field to green. Elliott used the inside line hauling into turn one taking the lead over Ivey, Denny Chamberlain, Bob Salathe and Mark Pettyjohn. The caution plagued event was won by Elliott over Ivey, Salathe, Bernheisel, from ninth and Bopper Bare. Rounding out the top ten were Jamie Lathroum, from tenth; Chamberlain; Mark Pettyjohn; Sean Cosgrove, from eleventh; and Keith Jackson form fifteenth.
In the stellar Goddard Performance Parts 2nd Twin 25-lap Qualifying race presented by Warrior Race Cars Qualifying race Ronnie DeHaven and Brent Robinson paced the field to green. As the front row exited turn two at full throttle, DeHaven tried to slide up in front of Robinson as the duo touched sending DeHaven spinning wildly backward in front of the entire field as they barreled down the back stretch. DeHaven came to rest against the inside guardrail ending his night.
According to Series rules, Bo Feathers slide up to the pole beside Robinson to restart the race. Robinson led the first two circuits over Feathers but by lap 3 Feathers had taken the measure of the young Robinson and grabbed the lead. Feathers, Miller, Balzano, Covert, and Doug Dodd put on a driving clinic treating the fans to a great 25-lap performance.
At the finish Feathers clung to the top spot over Miller, Balzano, Covert, and Dodd. The next tier of five included David Williams, from ninth; Jack Pencil; Chuck Harper, from twelfth; Rod Conley, from tenth; and Dan Stone from fourteenth.
