Miller Notches Fourth MACS Victory in Rumble on the River 50 at PRP

Jeremy Miller, Littlestown, PA continues his hot streak with the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series as he notched his fourth win of the season at the Coleman families Portsmouth Raceway Park, Portsmouth, OH claming the $5,000 top prize in the Pendelton Truck Sales “Rumble on the River 50 presented by the 239 Auto Group.

Billy Moyer and defending Series Champion, Mike Balzano, paced the 24-car field to green with eventual winner Miller in fifth on the grid.

Balzano won the drag race to turn one with Moyer slotting into second over Bart Hartman, Miller and Doug Drown. Balzano set an astonishing pace but no one was letting the leader out of their sight. Moyer dogged Balzano for the lead until lap five when Miller, after gaining third one circuit earlier, moved into second relegating Moyer to third.

The first of six cautions flew on lap 7, which was the only thing to slow Balzano’s torrid pace. Balzano chose the outside with Miller flanked to his inside for the double file restart. The race into turn one was a dead heat and continued that way the entire way around the super smooth and wide racing surface until Miller narrowly nipped Balzano at the stripe to lead lap 8.

Another caution flew at the conclusion of lap 8 and stacked the field again for the final double file restart. Miller, like Balzano before him, chose the outside rail with Balzano this time hugging the inside. The leaders brought the field down for a picture perfect start. Miller was hurling around the outside while Balzano was nipping at his heels from the inside.

Miller maintained the point by the narrowest of margins over Balzano, current MACS point leader Jason Covert, from seventh; Moyer and Hartman. Lap 10 saw Covert squeeze past Balzano for second. Several times the top three came out of the corners three wide for the lead with Miller hanging on tenaciously over Covert, Balzano, Hartman and Moyer.

Back to back cautions on laps 20 and 21 kept the field stacked tightly on Miller. One of those cautions was for fourth place runner, Hartman as he coasted to a stop on the back chute. Miler was looking for some relief from the relentless onslaught of Covert, Balzano, Moyer, and Jim Bernheisel, from 12th. Miller through the slow downs never lost his rhythm as he continued to lead over Covert, Bernheisel, Balzano and Doug Dodd.

Miller bolted into lapped traffic for the second time on lap 31 trying to shake Covert’s assault for the lead. Covert was having nothing of the tactic as he matched Miller’ every move. With 15 laps remaining Miller was in command over Covert, Bernheisel, Balzano, and R.J. Conley, from 14th.

On lap 37 Covert’s fantastic run came to an abrupt halt as he crossed the start finish line and hooked a hard right into the infield. The final restart of the night saw Miller over Balzano, Bernheisel, Conley, and Drown.

Miller fired the field for the final time at the cone with his quartet of pursuers hot after him. Miller entered lapped traffic with two to go but he was able to hold off all challenges for the win over Conley, Balzano, Bernheisel, and Rod Conley, from thirteenth. The rest of the top ten included Drown, Eddie Carrier, Jr., from 11th; Shannon Thornsberry, Kenny Christy, from 19th; and Jackie Boggs, from sixteenth.
