Despite less than favorable forecasts for the entire region, General Manager Lisa Bragunier and Director of Competition Steve Crumbacker stayed the course with the track prep crew providing an excellent surface at Frank Plessinger’s Hagerstown, Speedway, Hagerstown, MD.
Jeremy Miller, Gettysburg, PA was the main benefactor as he streaked to his fifth Mid-Atlantic Championship Series win claiming the 32nd Annual Hub-City National garnering $13,000 for his efforts after capturing two of the three 50-lap segments.
In victory lane Miller indicated, "We’ve ran pretty good down here this year with this car and we have had some really low points were some races we really struggled to make the show but we just kept working with it. But I really got to hand it to my dad, he made the winning move. It was his advice I took and if I wouldn’t have we wouldn’t have won the race."
Miller confided that his choices paid-off, "We brought the car with the little motor in it because we thought the track was going to be black and slick; but you couldn’t ask for anything better (than this) because you can race from the bottom to the top. The track was awesome. It’s always nice and smooth; I wish they would keep it like this every week."
Miller concluded his winning remarks with, "It’s pretty cool (winning my 2nd Hub-City National 150), I always used to come here to watch this race and I have seen a lot of great people win this race. I’m nowhere near these guys but just to be a part of something special down here, that’s really cool!"
After two tremendous preliminary 50-lap contests Andy Anderson, winner of the first 50-lap segment, and Miller, winner of the second, flanked each other on the front row of the final 50-lap shoot out.
Anderson and Miller fired the field in a picture perfect start as the leaders hurled their mounts into turn one. The super smooth surface provided three to four distinct grooves which were available all night long. Miller was utilizing the middle and bottom while Anderson was flying around the high side.
Bo Feathers from his fourth place start slotted into second over Anderson on lap 3. With five laps complete Miller was leading over Feathers; Kirk Ryan, Jr., from seventh; Anderson; and D.J. Myers from sixth.
The first caution flew on lap 10 for J. T. Spence. Miller quickly reassembled the field and chose the outside line while Feathers slid to his inside for the restart. The battles being waged throughout the field were incredible as three and four wide racing was the rule and certainly not the exception.
By lap 20, Miller was still on point over Feathers, Myers, Ryan, and Nathan Durboraw, from 13th as he was sailing around the top of the ultra fast and smooth ½ mile.
The most significant incident of the event happened on lap 31, when Gerald Davis spun and was setting sideways in turn three; and with no where to go and flying at speed around the top rail, former Series Champion, Jack Pencil made significant contact with the disabled Davis mount bringing out the red flag. After some tense moments, Davis emerged, shaken but okay as did Pencil. Both cars were heavily damaged and done for the evening.
Miller regrouped the field with Feathers still hot on his trail followed by Myers, Durboraw, and Jason Covert, from ninth. Miller blazed the field back to life as Rick Elliott grabbed fifth, after starting 22nd. The dog fight for fifth was intense as Covert grabbed it back from Elliott on lap 35.
Miller’s effort was phenomenal as everything Feathers tried was met with precision by the leader. Lap 44 saw the final caution appear for defending Series Champion, Mike Balzano, who snapped off his second left rear wheel hub of the event. Balzano’s crew made quick repairs and once again rejoined the tail of the field for the second time.
After collecting the field, Miller shot off at the cone for the final time followed by Feathers, Durboraw, Myers, and Covert. The final six circuits saw the top five remaining the same the rest of the way to the checkers. Finishing in sixth was Ryan followed by Elliott who slide to seventh on the final circuit, Booper Bare, from 12th; Ronnie DeHaven, from 17th; and Allen Brannon.
The exciting Sunoco Race Fuels first 50-lap segment was presented by Bazell Race Fuels and saw Andy Anderson taking the win after starting in the sixth position. Frankie Plessinger and AFCO Shock the Clock Fast Qualifier Tim Wilson paced the field. Wilson grabbed the lead and held the top spot until lap 11 when Anderson using the high side swept past him for the lead.
Anderson would maintain the top spot to the checkers with Gary Stuhler finishing second over Roy Deese, Kirk Ryan, from 13th; and Jason Covert, from 15th. The rest of the top ten included, J.T. Spence, Nathan Durboraw, Rod Conley, from 14th; Plessinger, and Ronnie DeHaven, from 17th.
The entertaining Goddard Performance second 50-lap segment saw 2005 ASI Racewear Hard charger, Jim Bernheisel sitting on the pole followed by Allen Brannon, with eventual winner Jeremy Miller in sixth. Brannon led the first eight circuits until Miller worked his way to the front to capture the top spot on lap 9. Miller was dogged to the checkers by Brannon, and finally Feathers from his seventh place start. Feathers held second to the checkers followed by Myers, from ninth; Bernheisel; Brannon; Booper Bare; Jack Pencil; Mike Balzano, from 10th; Brian Booze from 13th; and Gerald Davis from 16th.
