Jeremy Miller, Gettysburg, PA is the NEW beast of the East claimed the $20,000 top prize in the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series sanctioned Indiana County Tourist Bureau’s Fall Fest XII at Jack and Donna Lentz’s Challenger Raceway, Indiana, PA.
Dick Barton and Matt Lux paced the 25-car starting field to green, with eventual winner Miller slotted in third on the grid. Barton blazed into the lead at the drop of the green followed by Miller, Lux, Davey Johnson and Todd Andrews. Lap one was just complete before the first miscue of the event happened between former Series Champion, Jack Pencil and young gun, Keith Jackson which brought out the first of eight cautions.
Barton and Miller quickly assembled the field two-by-two for the restart with Barton again assuming the point as the green waved. Four short revolutions later the next caution appeared for a minor incident between Jeff Rine and 2005 ASI Racewear Hard Charger Jim Bernheisel. At this juncture, Barton was still manning the point over Miller, who had patiently been waiting for his opportunity, followed by Bart Hartman, out of sixth at the start, Lux, and Johnson.
The final double file restart saw Barton, once again get the jump on Miller beating his adversary into the first turn. Miller wasn’t going to be denied however, as he roared back beside the leader only to be nipped at the stripe. That would be Barton’s last lap as the leader as he relinquished the top spot to Miller on lap 7.
Miller was in command over Barton, Lux, Hartman and Johnson as the next five laps were quickly in the books. Miller tried to duck into lap traffic on lap 19 to free the exhausting grip that Barton had on him for the lead.
Miller was in a zone with his rhythm and three more slow downs before half-way didn’t phase his effort. Drivers were battling back and forth for position. They would give ground only to take it back in a short interval later. This sort of intensity was happening all over the exceptionally smooth and wide surface. Three wide racing could be found for position on almost every lap throughout the course of the field.
With 35 laps remaining, Miller forged into lapped traffic once again trying to shake Barton and his flock of challengers. Miller totally undaunted by the pursuit simply went abut his business without flinching a muscle.
A major turn in the top five occurred on lap 58, which coincidentally was the final caution of the event, as Dick Barton’s motor expired as he coasted to a stop in turn two. Also exiting at the same juncture was Hartman ending his fine run as well.
The revised top five now included the leader Miller over Lux, Robbie Blair, who had rapidly advanced through the field from his 25th place start; Johnson, and Rick Isadore, in one of his finest series runs of his career.
Miller would fire the field for the final time at the cone, with Lux looking for his first ever series win, as well as Blair looking to repeat as the event champion. Lap after lap, Miller fought of the tenacious challenges of Lux, Blair, Johnson and Isadore.
Miller as the event lengthened was starting to flex his muscle and was building a lead over the competition. With just five to go, Miller had marched out to a 10-car length advantage over Lux, Blair, Johnson and Isadore.
Miller would maintain his lead to the checkers with Lux turning in an outstanding performance claiming second over the ASI event Hard Charger, Robbie, Blair, followed by Johnson and Isadore. The next flight of five include current MACS points leader Jason Covert, from 17th; Jim Bernheisel from 23rd; Rich Gardner from 20th; and defending Series Champion, Mike Balzano, who recovered to finish tenth after a pit stop on lap 24.
