Indiana, PA (July 17, 2008) The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series and Virginia Motor Speedway’s owner Bill Sawyer wish to announce a twist to 29th Annual, Ernie Shelton’s USA 100TM on Saturday, August 9. The event at the spectacular Jamaica, VA speed plant was previously announced as an entirely “Topless Show”; however, because of the inherent cost of taking off a roof and the loss of supplies as well as the additional materials to reattach it, the Series and promotional staff including General Manager, Clarke Sawyer have announced an option for teams wishing to exercise it.
The event will remain “topless” for those wishing to take their roofs off; however, it is not mandatory for competitors to remove their roofs to compete. Bill Sawyer, showing his support for the concept of a topless race is adding a monetary bonus to any driver that does remove his roof for the race. Sawyer commented, “If a driver wins the final ‘50 laps segment’ I will provide an extra $300 in cash to his or her purse earning if the car is topless (roofless) at the conclusion of the final feature. I believe fans will enjoy this type of event, but we need to start somewhere with it to infuse the concept completely as a topless race in the future.
Clarke Sawyer added, “This type of event provides fans with a set of 25-lap qualifiers that have the potential of starting 26-cars in each of those races as well as a 50-lap finale that could start up to 28 drivers. In addition to MACS the Carolina Clash will also have their competitors supporting this high profile event bringing a true North-South zest for the first time ever to one of the Southern Crown jewel facilities. The rules and format will essentially be that of MACS series with an open tire rule and 2200 pound weight limit.
With the additional funds added to the purse it has now swollen to just over $62,000 for a one-day show. One driver can now win $11,500 by winning one of the twin 25-qualifiers, setting fast time ($200 Gift Certificate from Genesis Shocks which Donnie Moran won at PRP in July) plus the final 50-lap sprint in addition to the topless bonus.
